Easter Morning Madness (and Your Pet Right in the Middle of It)
Picture this: It’s Easter morning in Crestview. The kids are on a sugar high, marshmallow chicks are staging a coup on your kitchen counter, and your Wonder Pup just proudly “rescued” a chocolate bunny from a plastic basket. Meanwhile, your cat has discovered the joys of hiding in shredded Easter grass like a feline ninja.
This is not an uncommon scene.
With just a little planning, Easter doesn’t have to be a stress-fest for your pets. It can be enriching, safe, and full of those memory-making moments your Wonder Pet deserves.
DIY Easter Egg Hunts for Wonder Pets (Minus the Sugar Crash)
You know who loves hunting for goodies just as much as kids? Your Wonder Pup. Only instead of plastic eggs filled with jellybeans, we’re talking treats tucked into nose-worthy hiding spots. The resident Wonder Pup’s that live in this household aboslutely adore hunting for their breakfast around the living room or in the front yard. We stuff kibble and treats into plastic eggs and scatter them around the yard or carpet. It’s a BLAST!!! Just make sure you supervise closely so a dog doesn’t eat any part of the plastic. Another fun thing would be to let you put hunt real hard boiled eggs however, be warned, eating eggs WILL cause spectacular gas in many wonder pets so it may be best to stick with normal dog treats.
For Wonder Pups:
- Use large, pet-safe plastic eggs or small boxes.
- Fill with a few favorite treats or kibble.
- Hide them in low but slightly challenging spots—think behind the couch leg or under the patio chair.
- Create scent trails with a high-value treat for extra stimulation.
For Wonder Purrs:
- Skip the plastic and go for cat-safe paper balls or boxes with a treat inside.
- Place them near favorite nap spots or play areas.
- If you really want to have eggs for your kitty, place catnip in a few plastic eggs and watch the fun!
It’s a great way to give your Wonder Pet mental exercise and keep them occupied while the rest of the house is in chaos mode. The trick is to give your pets something fun to do with your kids between big easter activities like church, parties, and family meals. Taking some time to engage with your pets or giving them easy things to do that you don’t have to supervise will keep them calmer while you focus on not accidentally burning that spiral cut ham (again).
Bunny Ears Are Optional, Enrichment Is Not
If your Wonder Pup tolerates being dressed up, great. Snap a pic. But let’s be honest—most of them would rather shred that costume than wear it. Be mindful and respect your pet’s comfort level when it comes to cute easter outfits. If they love it, GREAT! If they don’t, don’t force them. It will only create stress.
Let’s enrich their day in ways are sure to actually enjoy:
Try These:
- Frozen Carrot Cake Pupsicles: Blend plain Greek yogurt, shredded carrots, and a bit of cinnamon. Freeze in silicone molds. Tasty, cool, and safe.
- Shredded Paper Treasure Box: Take a small box, fill it with safe shredded paper, and toss in a few treats or a toy. Great for sniffers and destroyers.
- Snuffle Mats: Hide treats in a fleece mat. It’s the Easter grass their brain actually wants.
Enrichment helps curb unwanted behaviors by giving your Wonder Pet something constructive (and fun) to do. It may take a little planned a day or two ahead of time but it is 100% worth it and can help keep stress levels down and make the holiday more enjoyable for everyone.
The Easter “Nope” List: What to Keep Out of Paw’s Reach
It’s easy to get caught up in the fun. But some Easter staples can land your Wonder Pet in trouble faster than you can say “marshmallow chick.”
Here’s what to avoid:
- Chocolate: Yep, still toxic.
- Xylitol: Found in sugar-free gum and some baked goods. It’s seriously dangerous.
- Grapes and raisins: Especially in hot cross buns or baked goods.
- Plastic grass and basket filler: Choking hazard and a blockage risk.
- Cooked bones: These splinter and can cause internal injuries.
- Easter Lillies – These are toxic and cats love them – BE CAREFUL!
Keep baskets high, trash sealed, and leftovers out of reach—especially if you’ve got a counter-surfer in the family. One more warning about chocolate – we can never say it enough. Chocolate in any form is a no go for pets. You dog may love it but it is not worth the vet bill or the carpet cleaning bill that is likely to follow if you give in to those puppy dog eyes and let them have a cadbury egg.
If the pets accidently DO get ahold of anything on the list above Contact our friends at On Point Vet in Fort Waltong to help get things sorted and make sure your dog or cat is 100% Ok.
Guests, Kids, and Hippty hoppity Chaos: Managing the Mayhem
Even the most social Wonder Pet has a limit. Easter can be loud, crowded, and unpredictable—which isn’t exactly a dream scenario for animals. Making sure your pet has what they need to be stress free is essential.
Tips for a smoother holiday:
- Set up a quiet room with water, a cozy bed, and their favorite toy.
- Let kids and guests know not to feed your pet—especially not candy or table scraps.
- Use baby gates or doors to create pet-safe areas and prevent sneaky escapes.
Some pets thrive in the middle of the action. Others? Not so much. Give yours the choice but make sure they are safely contained and cannot get hurt or escape! We don’t want to see any lost dog posts on crestview word of mouth.
No FOMO: Easter Is for Wonder Pets Too
At the end of the day, your Wonder Pet just wants to be included whether that means joining the egg hunt, snoozing on the couch, or sitting nearby as the family celebrates. After all, they are part of the family too right?
They don’t need chocolate or baskets, although a basket full of tummy friendly treats and toys would definetly be fun for them. They really crave your attention, and maybe a carrot-shaped chew toy and some love.
So while you’re managing brunch logistics and trying to remember where you hid that last egg, take a second to check in on your furry family member. Their Easter should be just as joyful as yours.
If you need help entertaining your pet the Wonder Team is just a call away, we can set up a dog walk or playtime for your baby any day of the week, including holidays, to help make sure your pup is happy, healthy, and stress free. Check out why your dog needs daily dog walks and consider letting the easter bunny bring your pet the gift of a wonder sitter to help keep them entertained and happy!
